Research shows that different people can respond differently to identical diet and exercise programmes. Some people can lose a significant amount of fat, while the next person sees minimal results despite (ostensibly) doing the same things. 

If fat loss and maintaining a [healthy body weight](https://www.alphabetguides.com/tag/fat-loss/) were only about adjusting your calories in and calories out, this would not be possible. Two different people on a strict 500-calorie deficit should lose the same amount of weight, right? We know this doesn't happen, so there must be other things involved.[\[1\]](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK221839/?ref=alphabetguides.com)

Different responses are partly due to genetic factors, but environmental and psychological factors play equally important roles. Your physical surroundings, social networks, daily routines, and the mental “frameworks” you use in everyday life influence your [food choices](https://www.alphabetguides.com/tag/diet/) and eating behaviours in ways that traditional diet advice rarely considers.

The impact of these “outside influences” often surprises people who assume that willpower and motivation can override everything and are the sole determinants of your body fat levels. But changing some of these "outside influences" can be more effective than motivation and willpower alone. 

Making small, easy changes can also eliminate (or reduce) the need for constant self-control, which usually eventually ends up derailing weight loss efforts in the long-run.[\[2\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29592652/?ref=alphabetguides.com)

## #1\. Your Environment

Simply moving healthier foods to eye level in your refrigerator and cupboards, and placing less healthy options in harder-to-reach locations, can improve food choices without conscious effort: this is known as “**choice architecture**".[\[3\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27185414/?ref=alphabetguides.com)

Check what foods are visible and within easy reach in your kitchen. The best place for the [ultra-processed junk food](https://www.alphabetguides.com/health-effects-of-ultra-processed-foods-an-overview/) is in the dustbin. The second-best place is hidden away. The third-best is on show. The least best is inside you. 

Just reverse the order for [nutritious, healthier food](https://www.alphabetguides.com/tag/nutrition/) options (i.e., make them easy to see, grab and eat). You can do the same for your other food environments if necessary: keep healthy snacks in your car, office desk, plan meals out for healthier options, and shop the healthier sections of the grocery store first.[\[4\]](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3165028/?ref=alphabetguides.com) 

## #2\. Your Social Life

Obesity can "spread" through social networks. People generally have an increased risk of obesity if a close friend or family member is obese. Obese pet owners are more likely to have obese pets. But at the same time, supportive relationships can **improve** fat-loss prospects through accountability, shared activities, and normalising healthy behaviours and activities.[\[5\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17652652/?ref=alphabetguides.com) 

Consider joining groups or communities aligned with your fat loss goals to expand your support network. There are red and green flags in your social environment too:

- Look out for peer pressure and copying the eating behaviours of your social circle (i.e., “social learning”).
- Be conscious about where, what and how much you eat whilst socialising.
- Think about how conversations and comments around body image and how health priorities are framed when you talk about it with other people.
- Reflect on what type of gifts and treats you or other people give or receive. What behaviour is it encouraging?

All of these can be positive or negative. Having a neutral or (a better) "fat-loss-friendly" environment may help your efforts, for example: 

- Suggest healthier restaurants or ones that have healthy options available
- Bring healthy dishes or offer to cook yourself at social gatherings
- Be polite but firm with food pushers

Tip the odds of success in your favour. You should put your own health first. 

## #3\. Your Personality Traits and Individual Responses

Some personality traits appear to play a role in losing fat (and maintaining it) successfully. It's probably not surprising that organised, self-disciplined, goal-oriented, dependable people who can control their behaviour (i.e., “high conscientiousness”) have lower obesity rates.[\[6\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21744974/?ref=alphabetguides.com)

Other personality traits are less strongly related to obesity, but there’s some evidence that certain characteristics give different results to specific fat loss interventions, for example: 

- People with high “neuroticism” (i.e., people who regularly experience negative emotions like fear, anger, shame, envy, depression and low stress resilience) may respond better to more intrusive and structured programmes.
- High "conscientious" people may have better outcomes with structured methods such as meal planning, tracking, and clear guidelines.
- Extroverted people may respond better to group-based or "multi-prolonged" fat loss programmes (i.e., doing lots of different things at the same time) with social accountability.
- Introverts may find "self-directed" methods more effective and sustainable (i.e., take charge of planning, executing, and evaluating their programmes themself).
- “Open” personalities may prefer varied or flexible approaches to prevent boredom.

That said, there's **little evidence** to suggest that fat loss programmes can successfully be tailored to certain personality types. There may be some strategies that you can use to your advantage, rather than a cookie-cutter “one-size-fits-all” approach.[\[7\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23176713/?ref=alphabetguides.com)

We can't determine your personality, but reflect on your own experiences and recognise that your own natural behaviour patterns can potentially help match interventions to personality traits in order to improve outcomes. 

But be aware that tailoring fat loss programmes to your personality can carry risks if it's used as an excuse to avoid change or to justify bad habits. Personality should be seen as a guide for choosing “which” [fat loss strategy](https://www.alphabetguides.com/3-underrated-ways-to-lose-fat/) may be best, not as a limiting belief or a justification for taking the easiest option. 

## #4\. When You Eat

Eating larger portions earlier in the day is generally better for fat loss than eating most of your calories in the [evening or late at night](https://www.alphabetguides.com/eat-for-better-sleep/). However, the optimal timing of when you eat varies based on your waking hours (“chronotype”), work schedule, and other lifestyle factors (e.g., life demands, family, living arrangements and other duties).

You can experiment with different eating patterns to identify what works best for your natural rhythms and personal schedule. Some people function better with larger breakfasts or lunches and lighter dinners. Other people prefer smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Some people like eating just [one (large) meal a day](https://www.alphabetguides.com/types-of-intermittent-fasts/)! 

You can track energy levels, [hunger](https://www.alphabetguides.com/appetite-and-body-weight/), and how well you follow your new dietary pattern, rather than just rigidly following generic timing recommendations that may not suit your individual biology and lifestyle. Trying to recall your feelings, emotions, and even what you eat is notoriously inaccurate, so track it as you go.[\[8\]](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9605877/?ref=alphabetguides.com)

## #5\. Cognitive and Psychological Factors

"Decision fatigue" can lower self-control and increase preferences for “default options” (i.e., reach for what’s available, what you can see, and what you're used to eating), which are often the [convenient, calorie-dense foods](https://www.alphabetguides.com/why-ultra-processed-foods-become-popular/). This can explain why many people start the day with healthy intentions but end up making poor food choices by evening, when your cognitive resources are low.[\[9\]](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6119549/?ref=alphabetguides.com)

The average person can make hundreds of food-related decisions every day, from what to eat for breakfast to whether to finish everything on their plate. Each decision represents an opportunity for "failure" unless you've automated some of them. 

Successful fat losers (and "maintainers") often report using "systems" that minimise daily food decisions. Examples include batch cooking, having set standard meals (e.g., taco Tuesday or [fish Friday](https://www.alphabetguides.com/superfood-oily-fish/)), pre-prepared frozen meals, and ready-to-eat snack options available.
